The four hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa are scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.

The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa is to recognize and encourage scholarship among associate degree students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa provides opportunities for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.

We meet once a month through CVN, and more detailed information about the monthly chapter meetings can be found on the Phi Theta Kappa Moodle page. Our chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, Beta Delta Phi, researches the annual Honors Study Topic and creates a project based on that topic; hosts book drives, Red Cross blood drives, food drives, and toy drives; delivers Christmas gifts to nursing home residents; works with the administration of Black River Technical College to conduct a College Project; as well as other projects. Officers typically attend OK/AR regional meetings in the fall and spring hosted by a chapter in Oklahoma or Arkansas, and at least one member attends the annual international convention of Phi Theta Kappa each semester in order to help us maintain our status as a five star chapter.

Phi Theta Kappa has been recognizing academic achievement in two-year colleges since 1918. It is the only internationally acclaimed honor society serving institutions which offer associate degree programs. Two-year college presidents and administrators of associate degree programs in four-year schools have continually recognized membership in Phi Theta Kappa as an honor and privilege. Membership is given added significance by the fact that the society is recognized by the American Association of Community colleges as the official general honor society for two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa members come from different backgrounds. Some were in the top ranks of their high school graduating classes; others were once dropouts. Many are re-entry students who are getting a second chance at education; some are attending college for the first time. Some plan an academic career that will include graduate school; others will end their formal education at the two-year college level. Regardless of background, Phi Theta Kappa attempts to recognize academic excellence.

Each semester invitation to membership is extended by the chapter to BRTC students who have completed at least 12 hours of applicable coursework towards an associates degree or 6 hours of applicable coursework towards a year program with a GPA of 3.5.
