Medical Coding

The institution has determined its curriculum meets the state educational requirements for licensure or certification.

What is a Medical Coder?

Medical coders review medical documents in order to assign standardized medical codes.  These codes are essential in determining accurate billing, referral, insurance, and pharmacy records.  According to the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), medical codes translate physician notes, radiology and laboratory records, and other medical documentation into standardized codes that tell payers the following:

  • Patient's diagnosis
  • Medical necessity for treatments, services, or supplies the patient received
  • Treatments, services, and supplies provided to the patient
  • Any unusual circumstances or medical conditions that affected those treatments and services

Degree Plans

The Technical Certificate (TC) option is aimed at students new to the medical field.

The Certificate of Proficiency (CP) is geared toward students who already have a background in the medical field, either from current or previous employment or training from another allied health disciplines.  These students are often seeking a new set of skills for a career change.

Upon completion of either the TC or CP, students will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certification which is needed employment in the medical coding field.
