BRTC’s RN Students Participate in Month-Long Simulation Lab

Judy Haney, RN, BSHA

POCAHONTAS, AR Nov. 26— Black River Technical College’s Traditional Registered Nursing (TRN) students enrolled in the program’s Nursing Concepts III course participated in a month-long simulation lab.

During the month of October, the students cared for a simulation mannequin and were tasked with reporting anything they felt warranted a call to the physician. Each student called Judy Haney, RN, BSHA, who served as \”Dr. Judy,\” the simulation physician, to report their concerns. Each student received individualized feedback and telephone orders from “Dr. Judy” and used her orders to continue to treat the patient.

This simulation exercise was created after the college’s Nursing Advisory Board recommended a program activity that would give nursing students experience in calling a healthcare provider. The TRN students who participated in this month-long simulation lab will be able to use the experience they gained from the simulation in their careers very soon as they graduate in December.

BRTC appreciates Haney’s willingness to serve as the simulation physician and use her time and expertise to help BRTC students. She accepted 18 separate phone calls over the course of 2 days. Haney served on BRTC’s Allied Health Advisory Board for several years and is currently the Wellness Care Team Coordinator at 1st Choice Healthcare in Pocahontas.
