Black River Technical College (BRTC) traditional registered nursing (TRN) students recently created study guides on white T-shirts to help them study for an upcoming test.
Nursing Instructor Kelsie Cagle assigned the activity to the TRN students as a way to drive home the assessment techniques that students will need to get used to doing on their patients. The t-shirt design was reflective of all the areas that should be accessed on a patient’s thorax; anterior, posterior, and lateral.
“TRN 1 students made Physical Assessment T-shirts to help visualize the body systems they would be learning how to assess. Students were asked to be as creative as possible when designing their individual shirts to speak to the visual learning style. Auditory learning occurred during lecture, then lab practice brought in the tactile learning style as well as visual as they wore their shirts to lab practice. This combined teaching method really enhanced their overall understanding of physical assessment. Students really enjoyed this project,” said Cagle.
