BRTC Nursing Students Attend Clinicals at Arkansas Children’s Hospital

Black River Technical College (BRTC) LPN-to-RN Transitional pathway students recently spent a weekend at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH) in Little Rock doing clinical rotations.

During their time at ACH, students worked alongside nurses in the PICU and NCU departments and learned valuable skills to have when working with babies and children. They also learned about the Angel One helicopter and met with a flight crew. Each student said they gained experiences from the visit they could not have received anywhere else.

“My experience at ACH was life changing for me. I have been a nurse for 27 years but my visit to ACH has impacted my nursing career for the better,” Angela Island, nursing student, said. “To see and learn the complexity and the ability to care for children in the manner that the staff do was awesome. It resuscitated my passion for bedside patient care. It was a great experience and opportunity.”

Gina Cornish, LPN-to-RN Site Coordinator at Paragould, also attended with the students and spoke on her time at ACH. She said the visit was a learning experience for both her and the students.

“The nursing staff at ACH went above and beyond to help our students and it has really left a positive impression in my heart forever,” Cornish added.

The Licensed-Practical-Nurse-to-Registered-Nurse (LPN-to-RN) Transitional pathway is a 12-month program that offers LPNs/LVNs the chance to complete their RN degree without retaking PN courses. It enables working LPNs and LVNs to complete their coursework on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Clinical requirements occur on weekends and occasional weekdays. This program offers only Spring admission and the first week of spring classes will require additional weekdays for nursing orientation.
