Black River Technical College (BRTC) nursing student Beverly Britt recently had the opportunity to lead a class at the Arkansas Student Nurses Association (ASNA) Convention.
Britt taught 84 students from across Arkansas how to administer Narcan and potentially save a life. She said teaching the class was an experience that will stick with her for a long time. After the class, a student thanked Britt and explained how they had witnessed an overdose on their campus. The student told her that they now felt confident to step in and save a life.
“Honestly, that hit me hard,” Britt said. “It reminded me that even a super simple skill can make someone feel powerful in the middle of an experience most think will never happen.”
In January, Britt joined ASNA and applied to the Board of Directors. She was appointed as District IV Director and serves as a liaison between nursing schools in her district. She said being a part of ASNA’s board had opened many doors for growth, leadership, and connection.
“It was a full-circle moment for me, proving what nursing is all about,” she expressed. “Being prepared, being present, and being the difference when it matters the most.”
Britt will finish her time at BRTC in December and will graduate from the Traditional Registered Nursing program. BRTC’s registered nursing graduation and pining ceremony is December 16 at 6:30 p.m. in the Randolph County Development Center on the Pocahontas campus.
BRTC’s registered nursing program combines classroom instruction, simulated patient care, and clinical experience to prepare graduates for a successful career in nursing. After graduation, students are eligible to apply for the national examination (NCLEX-RN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, for licensure as a registered nurse (RN).
