BRTC Foundation Member Mike Thompson Places in APA Awards

Black River Technical College (BRTC) Foundation board member and First Horizon Branch Manager Mike Thompson placed third in the Arkansas Press Association Better Newspaper Editorial Contest sports column category.

“Contributing columnists like Mike is one of the things that make our paper stand out so much among the others,” Pocahontas Star Herald Editor-in-Chief John Allen French said. “His knowledge in sports in unparalleled and he can put it together in a way that anyone can understand. Seeing Mike place among some of the state’s top sports columnists was wonderful.”

“I’ve been freelancing sports articles for around three years now,” Thompson said. “I’ve done articles for the Star Herald, the Osceola Times, and online in bestofarkansassports.com.”

Thompson and his wife Robyn reside in Pocahontas. The pair share five children and four grandchildren.

Thompson has served on the BRTC Foundation for three years.

Through partnerships with individuals, businesses, organizations, and local communities, the BRTC Foundation aids in the development and enhancement of programs, facilities, and student opportunities.  The Foundation has been instrumental in many activities including providing access to special cultural activities including the annual Holocaust Survivor Series, working with partners to award more than $68,000 in student scholarships, support important historical and preservation work through Project REACH, providing access to grant opportunities aimed at non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education.

The purpose of the Black River Technical College Foundation is to assist with development and enhancement of programs and facilities; to assist in providing broader educational opportunities and services to students, staff, alumni, and the community and to receive, hold, and administer gifts or grants.
