BRTC Foundation Establishes New Student Emergency Fund

The Black River Technical College (BRTC) Foundation has received a donation to establish a new support fund for student needs and emergencies. The Black Hawk Boost fund was created by Shannon Jacobson, BRTC Director of IT, and his wife Carmen. Jacobson noticed the need for more emergency funding for students and wanted to have a way to support them. This fund defers from the other emergency funds offered by the BRTC Foundation in that students cannot be Pell-eligible and may be part-time BRTC students.

The Black Hawk Boost supports non-traditional (age 25+), not Pell-eligible, full-time, and part-time students. The fund helps students cover emergency expenses like automotive issues, small health costs, professional clothing, technology purchases, daycare and child needs, and other emergency needs. To apply for funds, students must fill out an application explaining their need for extra funds. A maximum amount does apply.

To give the fund a boost of its own, BRTC Foundation Board Secretary/Treasurer Scott Trammel and his wife Joniece matched the Jacobson’s donation. The BRTC Foundation also matched Jacobson’s and Trammel’s gifts.
