Black River Technical College is Fulfilling its Mission Statement through Students Like Cheri Walker

Cheri Walker

PARAGOULD, AR. Oct. 22.— BRTC’s fulfillment of its mission is demonstrated by the success of the students served.  The BRTC mission is “Black River Technical College transforms lives through quality academic and career education to enhance the community we serve.”  Cheri Walker of Walnut Ridge, AR, worked as an LPN for 22 years before returning to college to become an RN. She had completed her LPN at Cotton Bowl now known as Arkansas Northeastern College.  In 2012, she chose to continue her education at Black River Technical College because it was affordable and close to home.

Although it was tough to work fulltime and go to college, Walker finished the prerequisites and started the LPN-to-RN bridge program through Arkansas Rural Nursing Education Consortium (ARNEC).  She excelled in the program and received the Nightingale award at the 2014 graduation.

Following graduation, Walker continued her education at UAMS and received Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2016 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 2019.

Today, she works as a nurse at AMMC in Paragould as House Supervisor and at Lawrence Memorial Health Services Emergency Room in Walnut Ridge, serving two communities in the college’s service area.

Cheri believes that continuing her education at BRTC a great decision. She states, “Black River Technical College provides an exceptional opportunity for anyone to continue their education, gaining the knowledge and skills to have successful and rewarding careers.”
