About the Program

The Respiratory Care program is 18-months in length and begins in January each year.  Applications for the program open Feb 1st of each year and close at the end of Fall term.

Program Mission Statement

To prepare graduates with demonstrative competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains of Respiratory Care practice as performed by Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRTs).

How to Apply to a BRTC Respiratory Program

Selection Criteria

Selection into the Respiratory Care is based upon specific criteria.

  • Submission of a complete application for admission into the professional curricula for Respiratory Care. This includes an essay.
  • Completion of all prerequisites with a grade of "C" or higher.
  • Passing Score on the program entrance test given each year.
    • TEAS exams are given the first Thursday of each month on the Pocahontas campus.  To sign up for one please email danac@blackrivertech.edu
  • Overall grade point average (GPA) on all college course work.

Applicants will receive notification of acceptance, alternate status, or denial via mail, email, and/or telephone.  Selected applicants will be enrolled in their courses by BRTC staff upon acceptance into the program.

Note:  1-2 alternates will receive a letter stating their position in the program with the date of orientation.

All students receiving acceptance/alternate letter are required to attend orientation.

Essay Requirement

Write a professional 1-page essay addressing all of the following questions.

Answer ALL of the following:

  • What inspired you to apply for the Respiratory Care Program?
  • What experience, if any, have you had with respiratory ailments?
  • What are your career goals after graduating?
  • What do quality and excellence have to with each other?
  • What does professionalism mean to you?
