Math Awareness Week

March 14-19, 2016 the Paragould Math Department celebrated Math Awareness Week.

Monday, 3/14/16, was Pi Day. Pi is an irrational number that rounds to equal 3.1416. Monday and Tuesday, March 14 and 15, were set aside for specifically celebrating Pi Day, so both Monday and Tuesday students could be involved with the Pi Poster contest and enjoy pies and punch for snacks. The other events during the week included a contest to solve the Math problem of the Day, a Math Joke Contest, fifty Pi t-shirts giveaway, free Pi pencils, free Pi stickers and daily door prize drawings.

The winners of the Pi Poster Contest was first place was Scarlet Prince $25, second place was Dakota Willingham $15, and third place was Amber Pentecost $10.  Chris Bell won first place, $25, in the Math Joke Contest and Caitlin Clyatt won second place, $15. Austin McCalman and Jeff Beck won $10 gift cards by solving the Math Problem of the Day. Fifty Pi t-shirts were given away and 30 door prizes with the grand door prize, a Casio calculator, going to Jeremiah Householder.

All of these prizes, snacks and events for Math Awareness Week were made possible with the financial support of the SEAS BRTC Foundation, SGA (Student Government Association) and FEA (Educator’s Rising). The Paragould Math Faculty (Daphne Perkins, Travis Harris, Sandra Williams and Aja Osler) and the students appreciate your support.
